Out of Line: Ralph Steadman - A biography in 27 artworks
Artist, illustrator and writer Ralph Steadman has enjoyed a prolific 70-year career. In this TIN MAN ART publication, written to coincide with his 90th-birthday year and our landmark exhibition 'Ralph Steadman: Out of Line (Original Works 1961-2016)', Annunciata Elwes tells the whole story, from his early years producing humorous cartoons for newspapers in the 1950s and experimenting with his signature, through to pioneering Gonzo journalism with Hunter S. Thompson in 1970 and his observations of American life and British politics. 27 artworks provide linchpins in this small biography, with fascinating insights, such as why Johnny Depp's face is always in collage (he's too handsome to draw), what Steadman really thought of Maggie Thatcher, and the time he spent 18 months re-creating Da Vinci's The Last Supper on his bedroom wall. The book includes an Afterword from Sadie Williams, Steadman's daughter and director of the Ralph Steadman Art Collection.

The portrait of Hunter S. Thompson, with his trademark hat and cigarette holder, was created by Steadman for a limited-edition print which has now long sold out. Nixon, of whom the Gonzo duo was not a fan, leers in the corner. The artwork is complete with acetate scratch marks and printer's ink.
